literarlly

"leaving mamallapuram and reduciong weight/volume" book exchange ... tried to get French for English at the Nautilus Café but got an earful from the owner? about the manque de service pour les Français – n'oubliez pas – nous sommes en Inde - pas Québec.

donc j’ai quitté pour une paysage moins politique ..

et quel surprise ..

The Bob Marley café does literature as well. I checked out the humble collection of 20 odd books and felt like I could comfortably deposit my three – one by Mavis Gallant (another great Canadian woman short story writer), and two by Indian writers Ghosh and Desai – my inability to really distinguish between raises a number of questions but suffice to say that I missed the Japer Literature Festival which is held annually the second last week of January.

Anyway I know you want to hear what I got.

1. Light and Darkness by Natsume Soseki ...Soseki wrote this last novel as he was dying - in the mornings. In the afternoons he composed highly stylized Chinese poetry – for balance

2. Un traduction de Jay McInerney’s “La Belle Vie”. Jay – actuellement à New York - est membre “d’un groupe de jeunes auteurs prompts a capter l’air (Occident) du temps. «

3. Dalrymaple's « White Mughals » - a social history of the white men – Brits I assume – who went local for an Indian girl. Dalrymple was one of the keynotes at the Jaipur fête I think.

Gotta run – taxi leaves for Chennai in 15 hours ...
