As I like

Pulled into the hospitable beach town and UNESCO World Heritage site of Mamallapuram just in time for the evening's performance in the month long Indian Dance Festival. What a venue – the stage backs onto Arjuna's presence – a 7th century Pallava bass-relief masterpiece which captures both the mighty Ganges and the Lord Shiva fishing.

All of the great Indian dance forms are here... the sacredly inspired 64 guidelines for moving hands feet and face of Bharata Natyam - the intricate hand dancing of Kerelan Kathakali – the completive interplay between percussionist and dancer of northern Indian Kathak - the episodic dance and song routines of Andhra Pradesh Kuchipurdi. Put the intellectual and cultural wealth aside and you still have a very emotive and spiritually engaging experience – that is where I get on.

And one can see how the centuries old stylizations express themselves on the 2010 streets. Watch the Indian men as they communicate. Hands out ... fingers extended and a quick flick of the wrist will say “finish” ... or “it is that simple” or “let me softly invite you to ponder that ...”.... or what? Not to mention the wonderfully ambiguous head and shoulder roll that defies my understanding of skeletology of the spine ...

“As you like”.
